Squat time

(Sep 23, Fri)

Day 2 was squat time and I loved this one too.

Warmed up with Surya Namaskars and some lunges (straight and side) and then we were off to fetch the kettle bells. I had never seen one before. In pictures – yes, but haven’t actually seen one or used them. No big deal there – just heavy lumps of iron, with a handle and used for self-induced or administered torture, otherwise known as squats.

I got to admit that the way the coaches went about it made the whole thing interesting because there was just this small competitive edge about it, and like in running, this was competing with yourself.

We would start off doing squats (12 reps) using a 8 kgs kettle bell, and if you ‘succeeded’ in doing 12 reps with that, then you ‘qualify’ for the 12 kg kettle bell – and IF you can do 12 reps with that, then you qualify for the 16 kgs and so on until you disqualify – which is – you can’t do 12 reps on a certain weight. THAT weight now becomes your workout weight and then you got to try and do a couple of sets using that. Once it is put that way, you just got to give it all.

Very nice. I went up to 24 kgs and struggled big time with it and gave it up on the 10th rep. Dammit.

Arv sauntered across and said “Don’t worry, you’ll get better. Well trained people can squat up to 3 times their body weight..” and didn’t stop there – he actually did the math and spelt it out in kgs and in pounds for good measure, just in case we didn’t get it. Squatting 250 kgs! If you put that weight on me, I will die.

But there were a few in the class who went up to 32 kgs and did 3 more sets with that.

So, all we did today was squat and it was fun. As usual beat at the end of it.
