May 12, 2010 – Wednesday: Slow and Easy run at AU with the VCY folks

The Velachery (self-christened as VCY) chapter has a bunch of over-enthusiastic runners which even caused one of the CRs to playfully comment – “more mails than miles” – in jest, of course.

But, their enthusiasm is unquestionable; The zest, verve and more importantly, their consistency is truly remarkable. They post and run more often and more regularly than the core chapter.

This was a chapter which bore fruit during the CR Anniversary event that happened a couple of months back and so comprises mostly of people who are just starting off and so doing small runs and run-walks.

They are unafraid of posting small runs, proud of their slowish timings and they remind me quite often of the quote that Tiger sent a while back:

If you run, you are a runner. It doesn’t matter how fast or how far. It doesn’t matter if today is your first day or if you’ve been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run.
– John Bingham

VCY folks are all runners and total enthu-cutlets at that. :-).

They’ve been improving all the time and posting some impressive runs and timings nowadays.

I’ve been wanting to run with them, but I am a bum and a drive all the way to Velachery, to do a 5k invariably puts me off or choose another option.

But, Ashok post yesterday gave me another opportunity: They were doing a 5k at Anna University – This was perfect for me: I had been a little sick over the last couple of days, endured a torrid last evening and was in no mood nor energy to do a long one, nor a fast (by my standards, that is) one.

I wanted and was looking forward to a nice and easy 5k with some cheerful company. I got exactly that.

It was Ashok (who actually rounds up people at 4:45 in the morning and drives them up and down), Sudha, Ram Prasad, Anand and I. Warmed up and had a nice and easy 5k around AU. Ended it with a sprint and it was 5.3k in ~35 minutes.

Did a little of stretches and some core stuff – but it was mostly fun than any serious stuff.

Nice. 🙂
