The YMCA Republic Day Half Marathon

January 27, 2012 4 comments

Loved the run yesterday. Going into it, there was talk and then expectations set around a “fastish” run ranging from a sub-2 to 2:06 and the “worst” time being talked about was a 2:10. These are scary times.

Check this – Krishna had done a 2:03 a few months back and clearly wanted to go much faster. Preeti was his pacer and the half is her turf. Painter had a 1:45 assigned..

Anyway, I was going to give it all, and that is exactly what I did – really pushed hard as much as I could, enjoyed the whole run and totally surprised myself with a 1:56:change for the 20.4 km run. I guess, I would have finished at just over 2 hours or so if the 700-800 mts were added. Loving it! :-)

Couple of things that I was thinking about after the run, back at home, while chilling out (with my beer :-) )

The half marathon distance is a beautiful beast to tackle and is immensely satisfying. You are running somewhat fast – and – you are running long. You can’t go all out and you can’t hold back much either. It pushes you right to the edge, but you won’t die (like in a full). A sub-2 is massively challenging, almost tantalizingly within reach for a typical 6:00 pace runner and yet so elusive.

I am not going to accept yesterday’s race as a true sub-2. I could do the additions to time to compensate for the missing distance, but fact remains that 20.4 was what was done in 1:56. It is best that it remains that way, because I still have the sub-2 target to chase.

Then – the race atmosphere.. the whole event  in general – the friends, the sweaty high-fives, the medals, the group photos, the banter – it’s just so much fun! :-)

Jan 22 – 25

January 27, 2012 Leave a comment

I don’t know why I am so obsessed with maintaining this double diary – there is this log on dailymile which is more than good enough, but God knows why, I still want to write this crap down.

Maybe because I can’t write on dailymile that I felt like an idiot when I woke up at 0830 on Sunday (Jan 22) morning having argued with myself, slept in and missed the Sunday run despite having promised at least a couple of people that I will come.

Tuesdays are the *benchmark* days at the quad when lightbulbs are supposed to flash as we *see the progress* week-on-week with the bread and butter of these workouts – the squat and the push-up.

  • Squats are ok. I can just about squat 20 reps with 24 kgs. Just. (notes - I found it easier to use 2 x 12 kg kettlebells which balances out the weights a little better than holding a single 24 kg kettlebell)
  • Push-ups are still NOT ok. I am frustrated with the lack of progress on my upper body and core strength. I still can’t hold a friggin 20 sec elbow plank and I still can’t do 1 proper, good form push up. Can you believe that? I can’t do a solitary, proper push-up.

Wednesday was supposed to be the ‘easy’ day – a “skill” day where we learn a new move and the focus is not on killing it. But it was super tough! Diagonal displacement was the move today and many of us knew it earlier and I was pretty much wiped after I did some 50 of those (25 on each side).

That’s it – because Jan 26, the YMCA Republic Day Half Marathon deserves a post just for itself.

Good week since Bombay

January 21, 2012 1 comment

Typically, the week after a big event, especially a marathon, would be spent lazily, still soaking in and gloating about that experience, eating more than ever, partying a bit and basically doing everything but getting back to any kind of training.

Not this time though.

17 Jan (Tue) – went for my quad class and though I bailed out of the hard ones, I am glad that I went. I actually enjoyed the slow 5k + 5k bike ride. Madras has this nice chill nowadays and it’s brilliant.

18th Jan (Wed) – Krishna called for a 2k x 4 flyover killer, which thankfully turned out to be a gentle, chatty run. Very nice.

19th Jan (Thu) – Nothing; Skipped my quad session and stayed put. (Excuse – Deepu’s birthday and she was also a little sick)

20th Jan (Fri) – 100 mt hill sprints with Krishna. Just 2.5 kms net, but busted at the end of it.

21 Jan (Sat) – This is today. Was paired up with one of my favorite quad-mates (Bharathi) and we did some KB swings and some Thrusters. Followed that with a nice, easy 5k (in 35 mins), chatting all the way with Ramesh Seshadri.

Been pretty good. Doubt if this will stay this way for long, but it’s great while it does.

Krishna has an super plan going with which he is going to crack Auroville. As usual, I am trying to hitch a ride on his caravan.

Jan 14 – 15: Amazing Mumbai

January 16, 2012 6 comments

What an outstanding and awesome weekend.

Let’s get this out up front – I ran the Mumbai marathon on Sunday at what I think would be as close to my limit as possible and finished in 4:41

Long version – coming up.

(to be honest, typing this whole thing out is going to be tiresome, but I just got to put this down)

Saturday – getting set

Will keep this as short as I can :-)

Shahid picked me up, drove to the airport and we met ECR Siva and Krishnakumar there. Krishna was going to be running his first full – and we scared him. Scared him big time – with horror stories of the heat, cramps, peddar road, pain, wall and more. He had started running in Aug 2011, did his 1st half in about 3 hours and so we felt obliged to pass on our collective wisdom and by the time we were through, he was a nervous wreck :-) . Super guy. Flight was fun and uneventful.

Drove to the (un)expo. You can see Krishna below, with a heart-rate of about 140 sitting in the car; Shahid, Siva and me in the rear seat.

140120121291 140120121289

It was one huge – empty – hall! The bib collection and chip validation went without a hitch.

Met Manish Suri, Balaji and his 79 year young friend, Janardhan, as we were coming out.

140120121293 140120121292

This lovely man, Janardhan, ran the full marathon on Sunday – If I can run a marathon at 79, I wouldn’t ask for too much more.

All of us had lunch at Kamat, close to the bib-collection place (I am not going to call it an expo any more) and then we split and all of us went our way.

I checked-into Garware Club, which is located inside Wankhade stadium. Wow! :-) . That place reeks of cricket history and the rooms were fantastic! + this place is just 2 kms from the start point :-)

 140120121294 140120121295

Almost the first thing I did was to dump my bag and take a walk to see if I could get inside the stadium and take a look at that hallowed turf. The Ranji match between Rajasthan and Mumbai had just gotten over on Friday (damn), but the security still let me in.

Surprisingly, the whole ground looked quite small. No wonder that little man hit all those sixes here.

140120121301 140120121299

Unpacked, pinned up the bib, tied on the timing chip, set-up my Garmin and watched TV until Shameek (with who I was sharing the room) came in by around 1730. We had planned to meet up with Shahid and Vilwa at 1915 and go for dinner.

Which is exactly what we did – we had a big, awesome-tasting, pasta (what else?) at Gaylord not too far from where we were staying. Did some shopping (bananas, gatorade, water, band-aids etc), got back to the room and I crashed early – I was fast asleep by 2145.

Sunday – Race Day

Alarm went off by 0330 and we literally jumped out of bed. This is becoming almost a race-day superstition, but it surely is helping me – I took a long, hot shower! No kidding, it helps. I got warmed up, literally.

It was nice and cold outside – I would say around 18ish Deg C. As planned, met Shahid and then Vilwa and we walked to the start point, rattling away and keeping the butterflies as quiet as I could.

The start point was a beehive and real good fun – met up with all our friends – 4 of us, Preeti, Saad, McKinsey Ramesh, Bala, Ridhima, Balaji, Janardhanan, Krishna, Srini (Teach4India), Siva, Abhjijit, Puru.. Real good fun.

Paired up with Srini at the start and actually missed the start!! We were just chatting and walking along when we suddenly realized that the race was on :-) .

Whooped and away we went.

The Plan

Same, trusted “strategy” – Run:walk 5:1 – 4:1 – 3:1 – 2:1 – 1:1 stepping down each hour.

Objectives:

  • Bare Min – Finish
  • Will be very happy with – a 4:59:59
  • Bonus – will take anything lesser than the above

Wanted to do 9.3k in the 1st hour, +9 in the 2nd, +8.7 in the 3rd => Get to 27 (my cliff) by end of the 3rd hour which will almost guarantee me a finish under 6 hours.

The Race

Hour 1 – 9.6 kms – Strong start

Srini is an awesome dude. Couldn’t have picked a better guy to run with. Almost in awe of him. We ran (ok, run-walked) together for more than an hour as we wound around Marine Drive. I asked Srini to point out any significant landmarks around the place – and so went by Brabourne stadium, Wankhade stadium, <some beach>, <another temple>, the ugly Antilla – and the 1st hour just went by. We were cruising; no problems; All systems ok and very pleasantly surprised to clock 9.6k at the end of the 1st hour.

Hour 2 – 19.1 kms – Lovely patch; cruising along

It was somewhere around the 13-15k mark that we finally caught up with the 5:00 hour bus led by Amit Sheth and Neepa. I scrambled around that bus, partially skipping a break to put some distance between me and them (because in a run:walk, I could get stuck behind them while we passed and re-passed each other and it was a pretty packed bus). Srini opted to stay close to them and waved me along.

I was on my own as we headed into the Bandra-Worli sealink, just as the sun was coming up.

Here are a couple of pictures which I am stealing from Srini:

Sealink2 Sealink1

Yup – it was that beautiful.

I guess this was the best part of the run which I totally enjoyed. Still cruising, still feeling good, nice rhythm, flat roads, good views, quite cool even now and slightly ahead of where I planned to be at this stage.

(There was one steep banking on the sealink which hurt my knee for a couple of mins; or at least I thought, there was this banking – but I checked later with Shahid and he didn’t feel anything and later when we drove down that road, we couldn’t see it either. Ah, anyway, that was just a small twinge that worried me for a few mins, but it went away)

End of Hour 2 – 19.1 done.

Hour 3 – 28 kms; Feeding off the Bombay magic.

The route, which was great until this point, became less interesting; plenty of buildings on either side – but it showcased the awesome “spirit of Bombay” = There were so many people who lined up on either side; most of them offered water, biscuits, juices or simply stood there and cheered the runners along. It was just so good to see so many spectators who had come out, waving, whooping and giving us so much energy to feed on.

Half came at 2:12 or 2:13. I was on a 3:1 by this time.

I guess I hadn’t noticed the race organization that much so far, but now that I was beginning to tire a little, I became cognizant of how well organized this whole race was

  • police manned all intersections
  • one half of the road (if not both) was completely assigned for runners (no stray vehicles nor animals)
  • plenty of aid stations (they had said one every 2 or 2.5 kms – it certainly seemed way more than that) and never did I go thirsty or wait too long for a water bottle
  • aid stations had these mini-water bottles which were quite comfortable to carry; there were a number of garbage bins and the roads were being swept and cleaned through the race
  • Km sign boards were placed every kilometer and it synced well with my garmin – in fact, by now, I was counting down – run (3)-walk (1) –run (3) should give me a km at least

Towards the end of this hour, I was tiring and tiring rapidly . My cliff was rapidly approaching and I was finding it difficult to run the whole 3 mins but still pushing gamely.

I saw Preeti running along, looking great and since we were crossing each other, I could see the km sign on the other side of the road – 31k. I was like – nice! She’s ahead by ~20 mins and at this rate she could be in the 4:10 range; I also saw Mckinsey Ramesh ahead by around 2k or so.

When I cut to a 2:1 at the end of this this hour, I was still quite happy to have done 28k. 28k in 3 hours is not bad at all – for me, that is. I remember wistfully thinking that if only I had the energy to keep going like the first couple of hours, I could finish in under 4:30. Obviously, that was not going to be.

Hour 4 – 36 kms – The struggle

This is the hour I dread. The struggle, the pain, the questions and the real reason as to why we run these marathons. Trudging along on a 2:1, using all those tricks – counting steps, picking out significant landmarks (mainly lampposts) to reach in those 2 mins, getting-to-that-babe, keeping sync with someone’s footfall – just to keep pushing and moving.

The elite runners rushed pass. Phew. I barely saw them.

Then, I met Vilwa. :-) . That poor man had taken his wrong inhaler and had a wheezing problem early in the race. He called his friend to bring him one, but missed him at the place they were supposed to meet. He was struggling a little when I met him, but he picked it up and started pushing me from then on. :-) . Meeting Vilwa at that point was the best thing that could have happened to my race.

Peddar road arrived. Everyone struggled running up that monster of a hill. Not us. Ha. We walked. :-) . In fact, I was glad that hill came because it gave me a good 3 min walk break!

Besides there was a nice long down slope after that which got some momentum back.

If I remember right, we just (just about made it, or just fell short – but matter of meters either way) got to 36 at the turn of that hour.

The next 41 mins – 42.2 – kickass

Once we got onto a 1:1, almost as if on cue, we turned back into Marina Drive for the final stretch.

Vilwa picked it up on the runs and I matched him. Then, I picked it up and we kept going higher. I don’t know where we found that gear and that energy, but it was simply awesome. This was so beautiful. Yeah – we could run only 1 min, and then had to take a break, but that 1 min – we ran. We really ran. No shuffling, no trudging, no pushing-along – we friggin’ ran.

But, we needed that one min walk desperately. We tried going longer on one of those run patches and it felt horrible. Why struggle, lumber and plod when we can run strong and make better time this way? We passed so many people and kept going. A good rhythm set in and we were grinning and laughing as we ran and walked. It was fun.

Look at the stats – 21 mins running + 20 mins of walking – we did 6k.

It was an awesome feeling when we pushed through and finished strong. Done – 42.2 in 4:41

:-)

I loved it. I don’t think I could have squeezed out any more time from me. I gave it my all and just for that, this race is special.

——

The only thing I would change in the organization of the race was the mess at the finish. Like someone said, they treated us like cattle herding tired runners into a bloody spiraling corridor to collect our medals – why didn’t they just hang it around our neck at the finish?

I didn’t like this – this is at the finish to collect our medals:

150120121308

————-

But then, once we did, met with all our friends and it was so, so fantastic to meet up with all of them.

Preeti -  Awesome, awesome run. 4:35. Looked great and would have finished much faster if not for a calf cramp at 32. Better times are surely ahead. Congratulations! :-) . Delighted for her.

Shahid – On a 4:1 right through. Totally cool, measured and well paced run. Targeted a sub 4:30 and finished at 4:34. Looked great at the finish.

Krishna kumar -  we scared him, but he was awesome. Grit his teeth and ground out a 5:58. Super guy actually. Very good natured, pokes fun at himself and very happy for him.

McKinsey Ramesh – 4:43. A PR for him. Didn’t meet him at the finish. He had trained hard for this one and it showed. Ran a strong race, and now intends to get stronger. A potential quad-mate. :-)

Rocket – 4:34. She’s the cool one. She probably took it easy in the beginning and then picked up later on. Almost everyone said that she passed them at some point in the race. She looked fresh enough at the end to have done another race if she wanted!

Bala – 4:58. A bloody hero. Literally. Had a bad, bad fall at 10k, big gash on his forehead, ignored the Dr’s who wanted to stitch him up, continued running and finished in 4:58 – and I met him on Tuesday running a ‘easy 10k’!

ECR Siva – 5:14. Works for Johnson’s elevators, but took the stairs up inside a police station to take a pee and cramped up on the way back down!! Beat that for a story.

Balaji and Janardhan – 7:00. Serious respect. Again – 79 year old man! Wow. I mean – we know other 70 year olds and people much younger than that and how they are. 42 kms. That’s really something. And what does it take to stick and coax a man to the finish. Big respect for Balaji too.

Shameek – 5:17. Steady & strng. 1 mre case of Crmps whch hit hm but gud finish. Smiles. Damn. I can’t write like him even if I tried hard.

Srini – 4:51. A PR for him too! You can see that he totally enjoyed the run. Even more in awe of him now.

Sudha Mani – 7:00. Her gtalk status “I am Marathoner!!” says it all for this gritty lady who had a knee replacement just a few years ago.

Vilwa – 4:41. This man made saved my race. If not for him pulling me along, I would have probably hauled my sorry ass to the finish after the mats were pulled out. Thanks a ton, Vilwa!

Now, the speedsters –

Jacob (3:39) and Abhijit Shome (3:25) – For these comrade crackers, this would have been a stroll in the park. These guys didn’t even need 11 hours for the Comrades; they ate Bombay for breakfast and didn’t break a sweat

Puru – 3:57. Another super guy and another speed king who planned a sub-4/ PR and simply nailed it.

Manish Suri – 2:30 on a half. Asked him at the expo bib-collection-venue on what his target was – 2:30, he said. He finished 2:30. Very cool.

Anandhaselvan – 3.59. The ‘make a record or break a record’ guy who has actually been running the talk.  He is forever running races and killing each one. Way to go dude.

———–

Phew! It’s taken me ages to type out all this. I think I need a beer almost as badly as I wanted one that afternoon. I don’t think I’ll get one now, but I sure did that day. Showered and made my way to the Garware club restaurant -

Good times alright. :-)

Arvind – the form man; and a short run

January 12, 2012 Leave a comment

I’ve always noticed this – Arv is the form and posture man. He has a good eye and would focus on form and posture. He would rather get people to do lesser but with an increased emphasis on ‘getting it right’. He doesn’t care much about ‘killing it’. If you want form corrected, Arv’s the man.

Today was no different – we went through the drill but with an eye on posture.

I didn’t like the circuit so much though – it had a few that I don’t like:

  • Jumps – forgot the name of this one, but basically had jump using the hinge. <Poor>
  • Lunges – lunge and twist <Average. Not bad>
  • Scorpions – Hate them! <v.poor>
  • Push-ups – still knee push-ups! <improving ever so slightly>

We (paired up with Sherrif)  did these, not pushing for time,  and in reps of 5 each – we got some 5 sets done! That was it.

————–

Came home (by around 0625) and all of them were still fast asleep. Changed shoes, grabbed some water and went for a nice, easy, slow and short 5k around the neighborhood and I guess this would be my last one before Bombay.

Quad Day 4

January 11, 2012 2 comments

The 2nd week of Quad2 started off – things are now settled down and it’s becoming a routine. 4 am wake-ups are becoming easier and I am back to being among the 1st to the class. Enjoying the morning short bike rides.

Today was relatively easy. If anything, the warm up was tough! We learnt the right way to do a kettlebell deadlift – just a couple of sets of those which I really liked. Since it was more of a “learn it right” session, it was fairly easy with the emphasis on form and posture and stuff like that.

And there was this “conditioning” piece – a burpee 10-9..—1 workout where I am finally fixing my broken relationship with the burpee. I used to hate it. Now, I just dislike it. It was thankfully only the 4 step burpee (minus the push-up) and so I can still manage it. Learning to kick back instead of stepping back and surprisingly find it easier.

Biking back – I bumped into Hari, Venkat Rangan and Yash doing hill workouts and joined them for 1 short sprint up the hill. :-) . Loved it. Especially, it was great to meet Hari and watch him kick it up the hill and enjoy the run like only he can.

Walked back to Dimensions talking to Yash and Hari.

Yash was apparently (learnt from VPS) a tad miffed that I sent the short Quad mailer to the group and I took this chance to speak to him and clear the air. Glad I did that.

Anyway, what is interesting is that he mentioned casually that the Quad folks were, unintentionally, rubbing a few fitness industry folks the wrong way. Reading http://thequad.in/why.html – I can see what Yash is talking about. The “they-cant-differentiate-a-quadricep-from-a-bulging-dick” kind of talk is not flying well with some gyms apparently. Lets see. Thinking about dropping in a word to the coaches.

Neville’s Dawn to Dusk – and a few other heroes

January 9, 2012 Leave a comment

Yesterday (Sunday – Jan 8, 2012) was Neville’s Dawn to Dusk event – links are plenty, but here are some random ones:

Madras Round Table 94 HT Neville Runs From Dawn To Dusk

http://www.thehindu.com/news/cities/chennai/article2787226.ece

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Neville-J-Bilimoria/206995032720751

Clearly, a fantastic cause, a great runner and more than anything else – an awesome initiative. Plenty of us *think* about doing stuff to help, raise funds, do_your_bit and all that and very rarely *do* anything about it.

Something like this needs initiative; a genuine desire to help and contribute and a will to get things done.

In such events, it’s probably “easier” (hmm.. you know – running for 6 hours and biking for another 6 hours) compared to pulling in various people, engaging the ad/ media machine, planning and executing the logistics challenge and actually driving the whole event through. It must have been a bloody nightmare and so my respect for Neville has multiplied – not just for his outstanding running/ biking feat, but more for having pulled this off and having raised what, I am sure, must have been a substantial amount to benefit those who actually need it.

Now to my running heroes.

Sundar – This man ran a half before 9 am when the event was flagged off – and joined Neville all the way. Yeah – 6 hours of running + 6 hours of biking. The half was just a warm up. Sundar didn’t even get a mention in all that media blitz, or at least I didn’t hear any. Bloody incredible.

Painter! – I read his DM update and almost choked on whatever I was eating at that time. He was planning to run for a couple of hours and go home. Instead, he just kept running for the full 6 hours! I was like “what!” – I have never (and can’t even contemplate) imagine running that long unplanned. I mean – how can somebody plan to run for about 2 hours, and then just simply, unplanned – chug along for another 4 hours!

That too from 9 am to 3 pm.

I ran too – from 9 am to 11 am, and it was so humid and hot that we (Rocket, Shahid and I) stopped. We couldn’t go more – not even to finish a half (which was our original target). We just stopped because we were too tired.. and Painter – 6 hours and when I called him, brushed it aside as if it was no big deal. “Ah. It was nothing” he says..

A perfect morning

January 9, 2012 Leave a comment

Saturday – Jan 7

It was so nice. It had just about everything – I biked, worked out at the quad, ran with friends and biked back – came home with a super buzz and didn’t feel a tad like a workout – It felt like I had a lot of fun.

At the quad – press, push, pull

They were out to kill us. I was beat at the end of the warm-up!

Then there was a short 2-set*8-10 reps of the press. I was struggling on a 12 kg press and had to resort to bent-knee thrusters to press it up.

Next were the rows which were much easier. I like the row. But this time, they introduced this different technique of rowing – straight on instead of side-on which I was not comfortable with.

So, first, here is the original (and conventional) row which I am comfortable and like to do.

This is what is described here in greater detail and in most videos if you search for “kettlebell row”.

But, the variation to this, what was introduced in this was what you’ll find if you search for the “Kettlebell bent over row” .

Raj and Arv asked us to follow whichever was more comfortable to us since they work the same muscle group, and so after 1 set on the bentover row, I went back to the conventional style where I felt better immediately.

Anyway, these were just teasers. The main killer came next – 50 jumpsquats (with weights) and 50 push-ups (unfortunately, I am still on knee push ups). I was paired up with Sivaram and it was a 5 min workout (I think). We swapped after every 5 jumpsquats and after 50 each, we were already wiped out. We managed about 30 push-ups each by which time, the coaches called time. Thankfully.

We staggered out of Bamboola. Biked so slowly to Dimensions and was there by around 0610.

The beautiful beginners run

Shahid started this “easy beginners 5k” a few weeks back in an effort to attract beginners and newbies to running. We felt that 10k or 1 hour was too intimidating and 0515 was too early a start time.

The posts went out asking people to come in, enjoy themselves and do an easy run/ run-walk/ walk whatever, for any distance starting at an more earthly 0630.

The following beginners turned up: Bib Bala, Painter Senthil, Shankar, Shahid, Krishna, Sita (Krishna), later on – KK, and was it Manivannan who also joined. :-)

And we went on this stroll through Boatclub, laughing, chatting, clicking pictures and having a whale of a time.

070120121271 070120121270

In case that bright blue didn’t hit you because of that brilliant vintage, those ugly things are my beautiful vibrams and this was my “longest” run on them – 5.8 kms :-) .

Sita even thought she saw Rajnikanth walking, but was certain about Sivakumar. We had our share of celebsiting as well.

Biked back.

Mornings couldn’t get better.

Some more benchmarks..

January 6, 2012 1 comment

Kettlebell swings are my favorite and I hate burpees. Both were on the menu on the 2nd day of QII, but surprisingly, and I am sure it’s an aberration, my ‘like-level’ flipped –> I did something wrong on the kettlebell swing and did something right on the burpee.

Couldn’t figure out what I did wrong on the kettlebell swing and need to get back to working on the technique – I couldn’t get the thrust or the snap from the legs, ended up using my back and arms and felt a twinge on my back.

It was a 4 step burpee and that is much better for me (it’s the push-up that I have a problem with) and it is somewhat possible to get into a decent rhythm on the 4 step burpee. It was a benchmark piece and I just got to 50 burpees in 5 mins. The girls nailed it – swetha, lalitha and sharadha – all got to 60 burpees.

Next was the plank benchmark. I quit at 40 secs – among the worst in the whole batch (of around 24 folks). There was this new person called Vijay who went over 2 mins and since there was no one else who had kept up until then, he stopped.

If painter was around, he would have been the winner of this contest. No doubt.

Jan 3 – The Quad Part II

January 4, 2012 Leave a comment

Here we go again!

As usual – today was squat time! There were also a bunch of general assessments to benchmark all of us.

The bloody weighing machine is wrong. It says I am 84.5 kgs. I am sure they rigged it high so that it will show lesser later. :-) . Crap. 84.5 is just terrible.

I squatted 24 kgs, 12 reps. So, that’s the other benchmark.

Anyway, it was good to meet all the other batchmates and kick off Part II

2011 Review

January 3, 2012 1 comment

Basically, mixed year as far as running and fitness is concerned.

and now I go randomly…

The ITB injury at the start of the year was a bummer

The inconsistency in my runs, never having a plan, being totally messy with my schedules = a very patchy year

Hated having to cancel Mumbai and Bigsur

The Hyderabad and Munich marathons were wonderful. Totally enjoyed them

Enjoyed the quad workouts

Ah! IIT runs. Beautiful.

Am in 2 minds (at both extremes!) about being part of the ‘organizing team’ of the Chennai Runners half. :-)

Made some real good friends this year

Still fat.

Filling in

January 3, 2012 1 comment

Couple of interesting weeks to finish off the year.

I had a couple of good 10ks and a nice half following the Shahid’s ultra. The half especially was super – On a 4:1 R:W with Shahid, we ran at a pretty good clip to finish the half in about 2:12 or so which was quite good. There was a lesson in there – even on a long run, it is better to be on the offensive than on the defensive. Cutting back on pace excessively and being too worried about the later miles upfront, and being ultra-cautious may prove to be counter productive. These few runs, I thought, was getting me back to my running groove.

And then I fell. Like a clumsy, fat oaf. Tripping on a tiny reflector but going down like a sack of potatoes, falling on my side where I had stuffed a water flask in my pocket – and hurt my quadriceps badly – or at least it felt real bad. It swelled up and even a slight touch ached. That was it. Out for more than a week and limping along most of the time, icing it and stretching it, hoping it becomes ok soon.

On that Sunday, since I couldn’t run, KK, Shankar and I went on this beautiful bike ride and KK took me to the broken bridge – arguably Madras’ most beautiful place.

Then, there were just 2 more runs – one slow one with the painter and another half with the monk.

Thane, thankfully, had settled down by then and it was actually very calm on Sat (Dec 31) morning. The devastating storm, which took 42 lives and laid to waste plenty of homes and properties, had crossed the coast and had left, paradoxically, a clean, washed and yet a littered Madras.

It was an awesome run with Ram that morning. The original plan was just to run to the broken bridge and back. But, the weather was so glorious that we kept going and finished with a lovely half done in a decent time. I did not stop the watch while we took a few mins break to admire the beauty of the sea down at broken bridge, and yet had a 21.8k done in 2:17.

Here are a couple of pics which shows Thane’s fury – giant trees uprooted at Anna Univ.

My Mumbai plans are all screwed. Totally gone. I had some ambitious plans but now, thanks partly due to certain things out of my control, but largely down to my bad planning, it now looks to be a race where I go and see if I can salvage a finish.

Shahid’s Ultra – a kick in the butt that I so needed

December 17, 2011 1 comment

It’s almost a week since the Shahid’s Ultra (Dec 11, 2011 – last Sunday) – always wanted to write about it, but didn’t get around to it until now.

Anyway, it was a very sorry performance from me – I started with the 3:30 gang, trudged about and crawled until 30k (in a miserable 3:40 or so), walked for another 1.5 kms and just gave up. Plonked my sorry ass in Ramesh Seshadri’s support car and watched the others grit and grind their way through to Radisson.

—–

I ran a 30k inside IIT on Nov 26 – that was extremely tiring, but I had a reason excuse – that was my 5th consecutive day of doing something (3 quad days and 1 interval workout preceded that) – and I was actually very happy that I finished that 30k. A good run to push through pain.

Then 2 weeks of doing shit happened. Munich happened – 5 days of eating out, 4 of them with alcohol, 0 runs, 0 workouts – and then I came back to Madras feeling lousy. I ran a 5k on Saturday just to see if I remember how to run. 2 weeks is long – long enough to add a couple of kilos, feel blah in general and feel rusty. Wasn’t feeling too good about the Sunday run. 50k was daunting enough and I was feeling crappy on top of it.

Ok, so as you can see, I have built the base and doled out my excuses for dnf’ing – but frankly, what I did on Sunday was just bullshit.

I was never in it – never looked like even wanting to finish 50k. I started out slowest and kept going slower. Almost just “waited” for the 5:1 to become 4:1 and then “waited” for it to be 3:1 and so on. Even on the 3:1, I was taking breaks midway – first at random, and then all the time – *within* that 3 min run period.

Looking back, I was this bloody jackass who went out there and just ambled along until it reached a “respectable” time and distance – where I assumed and estimated that I wouldn’t feel terrible – and just gave up. If someone described this as pathetic, I wouldn’t argue – that was exactly what it was.

At that time, I made peace with myself convincing myself with the same crap I doled out before, but the truth is – I was never in it – mentally not there and physically out of shape.

—–

Need to get back and the last week hasn’t been too bad. After that run, I have no problems in getting out of bed – I just think of that run and I jump out of bed. I ran on Tuesday and then again on Thursday. Both 10k something to Marina. I did decent stretch session on Mon and Wed, and after the bike ride today, I feel better.

But, we’ll see tomorrow. Exam coming up.

Last day

November 29, 2011 1 comment

Today was the real last day :-) , but it didn’t look or seem any different. Maybe because I know I’ll come back :-)

Good workout today as well

- Thrusters with a partner (Nandakumar) 10-9-8-7…1 – though it is decreasing and so might seem easy, the break-time also equally decreases and so it actually gets tougher.

- Burpees – same deal

- High knees – 6 sets of 15 secs each

It almost seemed like the school was closing and we were off on our vacation or something when the coaches said that the ‘homework’ would be emailed to us, and then we all trooped off with a ‘see you next year’!

Been a super experience.

An awesome gesture by Arvind and Raj

November 27, 2011 1 comment

To mark the end of their 1st bootcamp, Arvind and Raj hosted all of us at Sigree for dinner. They also gave away a Quad t-shirt which also looks pretty cool.

1 – I think it is a fantastic gesture by them to call us all for dinner and then thank us for ‘keeping the faith’ and ‘believing in us’ etc. The small speech notwithstanding, I think it was still a good act by 2 decent people who have started out, in what I think, on a very nice note. Good luck, you two. Keep this sincerity and you are going places.

2 – Gave us all a chance to meet our batchmates and other batch folks during the day :-) , in better clothes and when we are more than just half awake. Almost didn’t recognize a few of them!

3 – Gave Deepu and me a chance to get out and grab a beer with a few others before the dinner meet kicked in fully.

But, it was all about Point 1. It was their night.

Pictures as soon as they come up.

Long, long run

November 27, 2011 3 comments

Boy! It was a long run. A very long one. I haven’t been this tired, worn out and struggling so much in a long time. In fact, I think I wasn’t this crappy even during the Munich marathon (or even the Hyd Marathon) when the distance was longer (and in case of Hyd the route more rougher).

Set out with the Painter, Rocket, Krishna and Preeti at 5:15 from IIT main gate, on my patented 5:1, 4:1, 3:1, 2:1. The goal was to do 30k.

Was feeling stiff and sore during the 1st 10k, but it was still reasonably comfortable, enjoying the banter among all of us. The quad is a good part of the conversation and I receive more than my fair share of jibes. Painter has shifted camps now and Krishna is the sensationalist – even normally, I am not known for my witty responses, but on the run while struggling to catch my breath, immediate and clever rejoinders were less forthcoming. But, I am going to sue him for character assassination and defaming my fair name in a public forum!

The next 10k was fine too, or as good as it can be. Tiring, but not killing. Good conversations, nice songs on Krishna’s ipod and a short shower kept us going. No big problems and I even think that once the muscles eased out, the 10-20k was probably even a little bit more enjoyable.

21.1 happened at 2:22 – sure, it is slow, but for a 30k goal, it was acceptable.

At 22.5, Rocket, Krishna and Painter turned back and headed back – their goal was to do 25 – leaving Preeti and me to grind out the next 7.5 kms.

I think I faced my cliff at 25k and hurtled down that from then on. It took us exactly an hour from 21.1 to 30k. The last 5k seemed like an eternity. For most of that time, we hardly spoke – I don’t think we could. It was a massive struggle, especially for me. We were down to a 3:1 and then to a 2:1, but still couldn’t run. Legs were cramping, feeling stiff and very heavy.

I tried every trick I knew – running hard, running slow, changing the way I ran, counting steps/ min, keeping up to Preeti’s footfall, setting targets a min (like that garbage bin, that tree or that pole), talked to myself – but it was still bloody difficult.  Seriously, I think this last patch was one of the toughest ever. In a way, I am very glad that I ran through this patch – this one was a workout for the head.

Got to thank Preeti for this, because, if I was running by myself, I don’t think I would have made it. It was her 1st 30k, and she was brilliant. Struggled as well, but stronger head I guess – she took off towards the end and finished real strong.

30k in 3:22 (Preeti must be around a minute faster).

One more to go!

November 27, 2011 1 comment

We all thought that today (Fri/ Nov 25) was the last class, but we got the good news that there is one more to go. :-) . So, today was the penultimate class and they were out to kill us.

Nowadays, it’s no new stuff – just the same ones (squats, push-ups, kettlebell swings) but the intensity, the weights, the overall workout is shifted up a good few notches higher.

Push-ups – same story, better left untold. Very sad.

Kettle bell swing – also similar story, except this one has a happy ending. (no – you cheapskate, think straight). I swung 2 sets of 30 with 24 kgs each. Highest ever. Very kicked.

Squats – tried to match my highest ever (48 kgs), but failed, but still it was good leading upto it. :-)

Wiped as usual, but loving these workouts more and more.

Saying what we like

Sharadha recorded testimonials with all of us at the end of the session with a flip, and it was very interesting to listen to everyone. Sure, everyone says good stuff on a video testimonial, but it was still interesting to listen to what each one found good and nice about the quad.

For me – frankly, I haven’t lost a kilo. No weight loss at all. But, I think I gained some strength. At least, on a couple of exercises, I can easily see the difference. And I feel very good during the day. :-)

I heard a few others and each one has a different gain – and it was good to hear. I guess these (or a selection) will be up on their site soon and I will link to that.

Coming to a close

November 24, 2011 2 comments

Last week of this bootcamp. Has been an awesome experience.

The coaches believe in driving it right up to the end and I didn’t think it was possible, but they actually up’ed the ante.

Tuesday was the push-up day. Argh! I hate push-ups. Totally hate it. I can’t do 1 *proper* push up. They split us up and all the men folk were tasked with doing proper push-ups (no knee stuff) – with weights on their back. All – except me.

So, every one there went from doing a set of 5 proper push-ups –> 8 kgs on their back –> on to 16 kgs –> 32 and so on. All rocked. Solid sets. Brilliant stuff.

No weights on my back, I was asked to just do 1 set of 10 push-ups. That’s it. And I couldn’t. Failed. I tried and even went up to doing 7 or 8 on 1 set, but couldn’t hold it. And these were not proper ones – Arvind looked over and said “your upper body and lower body are disassociated. Get them together” – I knew what he was saying; My “push up” is all over the place. Damn it.

Today (Thursday) was far better. As usual let me ‘steal’ the description from painter

One of those tough and challenging quad sessions today…We were drained in the end. It is a 5 set workout. Each set is made of 3 exercises (Burpees, kettleBell swings, diagonal displacement with weight) each done for 1 minute, one after another, without break. After finishing 1 set of these 3, we get 1 minute break. Then do the same again to finish 5 sets of this. Then it was planks for 25 secs. 5 sets with a break of 20 secs in between. Last quad session is tomorrow…Going to miss these interesting workouts.

Of course, I hated the Burpees and the diagonal displacements, but unlike the push-up, I could let loose a few grunts and get through it. Obviously, I gave up on the plank-hold a few times.

A nice long run

November 21, 2011 3 comments

Nice long run on Saturday with Krishna, Senthil and Preeti inside IIT again. I really love that place more and more. Did some exploring as well into side lanes and looked around for that croc board.

191120111048

Needed to start training to Mumbai badly and I guess this run marks that start. Am going to follow Preeti’s spreadsheet and try to get the long ones in. Anyway, the bootcamp gets over this week and only runs are planned in Dec.

Did 27k (on my watch – Preeti’s showed only 26.1) in 2:58 all on a 4:1. Decent beginning I would say.

My turn!

November 18, 2011 Leave a comment

Boy! It was all about toughing it out today. I was paired up with a tough cookie – sharada.

Workout – [25 x 3 kettlebell swings] + [5 diagonal displacements on each side x 5] + [push-ups] – this was a timed workout.

The swings were fine, but the diagonal displacements were not! Most definitely not. The last few sets were on sheer will.

Time was up by the time we got to the knee-push-ups and so we just a couple of sets of 10 each.

That was it it for today.

Umm. not entirely. I had promised the coaches that I will take them to either boatclub or sterling club for them to do deadlifts. That requires a barbell and some heavy weights. So after class, I went home, had a small breakfast, showered and got back to Bamboola by 8 just as they were wrapping up their last class and we went to the boat club where they deadlifted while I watched them. My turn to watch them in some pain!

181120111035 181120111038

 181120111043 181120111045

Needless to say, they were awesome. They deadlifted 126 kgs (277 pounds), and it was far from their best or anything.

They were actually saying that they were struggling due to multiple reasons – the bar was slippery, they hadn’t worked out with heavy weights in months and the bar was fairly low (smaller weights stacked up against a heavier bigger wheel).

Arvind went on to do some overhead presses as well.

Phew! It was terrific!
